German Chamomile oil is obtained by steam distillation. During this process, chamazulene, a compound responsible for the oil’s characteristic dark blue color and its potent anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, is released from the plant material.
Chamomile has been used in European medicine since antiquity. Egyptians dedicated it to the sun as a symbol of healing; medieval herbalists used it for abdominal ailments, insomnia, and anxiety.
In aromatherapy, it is valued for its unique ability to calm an overactive nervous system without causing dullness. On the skin, it has a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect: it alleviates redness, itching, and irritation associated with sensitive and atopic skin. On an emotional level, it helps release tension accumulated throughout the day, especially that which builds up in the body as a result of sensory and emotional overload.
